White Envelope for Christmas

As the holidays near, I thought to share our family tradition for Hans’s Christmas gift.

Every year, it’s not only hard for me to think of something to get Hans, but it’s always hard for our families too. So after reading the Christmas White Envelope Story – a bulb came on! See the story below.

It’s become our tradition to place white envelopes from friends and family on our Christmas tree for Hans to open on Christmas Day. See photo.

What’s in the White Envelope? Donations from family and friends to the Thoroughbred Charities of America. TCA raises and distributes funds to organizations assisting Thoroughbred rehabilitation, retraining, and rehoming: backstretch, and farm employee programs: and equine-assisted programs.

Over the past 31 years, TCA has provided over $25 million grants to more than 200 Thoroughbred-related organizations. TCA also provides a Horse First Fund to assist Thoroughbreds and their caretakers in need of emergency aid due to large scale neglect, natural disaster, or other catastrophe. The Horses First Fund has provided support in several equine neglect cases, has assisted with relief aid to the Thoroughbreds at Camarero Racetrack in Puerto Rico in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, and provided support to Thoroughbreds and their caretakers affected by the fires at San Luis Rey Downs in California.

Next week we will talk about

  1. the contributions we make for the Backstretch Workers who work with horses
  2. donations we make on every horse win.
  3. Fashionable Fillies. I was invited to attend this fundraising event during Breeders’ Cup @ Del Mar next week to help raise funds to benefit The Jockey Club Safety Net Foundation, which provide financial relief and assistance to needy members of the thoroughbred industry and their families.
