I can't say I was blindsided when I first met Hans in 1996. He had told me right off the bat that he loved horse racing. The first time he asked me to go to the races with him at Golden Gate Fields, I thought I needed to find a fancy hat and dress. But, he explained, "no it's not that kind of race this time." I didn't think anything else existed but those races with the big hats!
I met Hans while I was in college. Many times, I would bring my books to the racetrack and study. I did just fine since I took no interest in this sport. I got a lot more done than if I had stayed at home. So, one can say I got my degree at the racetrack!
Fast forward to today and I'll tell you that my love for the sport increased when I visited the barns in the wee hours of the morning and saw first hand what it takes to take care of these 1,000 lbs athletes. I have tremendous respect for those at the barns who exercise, groom, and feed them. Plus those that clean their hoofs, and maintain all the stalls in mint condition. I love talking to the workers, the jockeys and the very down to earth trainers! This is what I love most about horse racing!
So, when we attend live racing, in the wee hours of the morning, you'll find me at the barns in boots and jeans greeting the athletes and thanking the workers!
